Mophie has addded a huge USB-C based powerbank to their online store, called the powerstation USB-C XXL. The description reads: “a high-capacity universal battery with enough power to charge a USB-C laptop as well as charge all your other USB devices”. At the moment, the store still says “coming soon”. Details as we know it: for US$ 149.95 you get a powerbank with a USB-C and a USB-A port, where the USB-C port is used for power in. Mophie notes the bank can deliver ~30W.
MacRumors reports on the announcement, saying it “includes a 19,500 mAh battery”. Furthermore they say that “While 30 watts isn’t enough to keep up with a MacBook Pro under heavy load, the battery can still recharge a MacBook Pro in sleep mode or at least slow the battery drain while the computer is in use”.
We think that’s pessimistic. In our usage, a baseline 15″ MacBook Pro with display set to full brightness, where the user is using the laptop normally (i.e. browsing the web, playing a movie), the laptop sips about 10-15W.
The Verge also reports on the product release, saying: “What’s most exciting to me is the inclusion of fabric on the battery pack (…) classes the external battery up a bit — or at least photographs well”.
