Indiegogo 100W USB-C power pack

LIFEPOWR A3 battery packEdit May 1st: in a private chat with Lifepowr, we talked about the AC outlet of the A3. Although it’s not the most efficient way to power devices due to the DC-AC conversion, they pointed out that it makes the battery pack much more versatile and “able to power audio & video equipment like amplifiers, lighting, et cetera”). Thanks for that note, Lifepowr!

For a couple of days now, an interesting campaign is running on Indiegogo: the LIFEPOWR A3. There’s no shortage of battery packs, however we think this one is pretty unique. It’s equipped with two USB-C ports, each of which can output a much higher wattage than any currently available battery pack. We haven’t seen something like that before.

As crowdfunding campaigns go, this team has a history; two years ago, this team created a similar power pack, the LifePower A2.

Besides the USB-C ports, this new A3 version is promised to have two USB-A ports that conform to Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 3.0 standard, plus an AC outlet. Why you’d want to use that last one is a mystery to us; the only reasons we could come up with, are heating elements or old-fashioned laptops with proprietary chargers. Especially that last kind of usage is a bad idea; you’d lose a lot of power in the conversion from DC to AC to DC again.

The capacity of the pack is 99 Wh (27000 mAh). No weight has been given yet. The early bird version starts at US$ 159. As a comparison, the Anker PowerCore+ 20100 mAh USB-C battery pack costs US$ 66. However, it only has one USB-C connector which is limited to 5V @ 3A (15W). The claim for LIFEPOWR is to be able to output 100W (20V @ 5A), which means it’s able to quickly charge even the biggest laptops like the current 15″ MacBook Pro.

All in all, a very interesting crowdfunding campaign. It’s been getting a lot of attention and has reached 80% of its funding in just a couple of days, but the Early Bird is still available.
