Western Digital announces 4/8/10 TB drives that charges your laptop

MacRumors recently reported on an external harddrive announced by Western Digital. Besides the fact that it’s available in  4TB, 8TB, and 10TB sizes, it’s powered by its own power supply and can provide up to 45 watts of USB Power Delivery.

It’s a pretty interesting device for people who don’t require a dock and want to have large storage space available for media or backups.

You might think that 45W is not enough, but we regularly get through a day with our 15″ MacBook Pro hooked up to a similarly sized charger. Sure, with processor intensive tasks, the laptop may hit the internal battery but that might not be an objection.

Western Digital said that the drive will be available “this quarter”, so that would mean no later than June 30th. If you’re interested and live in the United States, you can pre-order the drive.
